GOVERNMENT + ARCHITECTS venue
A central gathering place and a publicly procured project itself, the Artie Smith Oval Pavilion is the perfect venue for our RAA community conversation.
ARTIE SMITH OVAL PAVILION
Ayling & Drury, in collaboration with Local Architect South Coast, took on the task of masterplanning a proposed sport and recreation precinct in Bombaderry, New South Wales. The precinct's centerpiece is a newly designed sports pavilion that caters to women's and men's cricket and AFL competitions, complete with amenities and clubrooms. Additionally, the masterplan included the design of modern croquet club facilities and a clubroom on the Eastern side of the development.
The Artie Smith AFL and cricket pavilion, a creation of Local Architect South Coast in association with Barnacle Studio, serves as a central gathering place for sports enthusiasts, families, and friends. Its design is rooted in inclusive values, welcoming people of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and abilities, making it an integral part of the state-level sporting facility. The pavilion is thoughtfully designed to cater to multiple purposes and uses, enhancing its versatility and functionality.
One of the remarkable features of the pavilion is how it embraces the existing Sydney blue gum trees of Artie Smith Oval. The long, dominant roofline wraps around the trees, providing a sense of continuity and rhythm while offering shade and shelter for visitors and players. This design element not only integrates the pavilion harmoniously into the landscape but also reflects the meandering escarpment line to the West, blending it seamlessly with the suburban context.
A tour of the project by Renee McGuinn of Local Architect South Coast will kick off RAA’s South Coast Community Conversation.
