MPARNTWE site visit

8 Hele Cres is a thriving creative hub that Mparntwe delegates will visit as part of the Thursday afternoon program. Once a light industrial block, it has been transformed into an oasis for native flora and fauna by Mike Gillam and Maria Giacon.

8 HELE CRES
Mparntwe (Alice Springs)

With his partner Maria Giacon, Mike Gillam has transformed a light industrial block in Hele Crescent to an arid sensitive development that is an oasis for native flora, fauna and a thriving creative hub. Gillam’s voice remains one of Central Australia’s most uncompromising and authentic.

Mike Gillam is a photographer, essayist and environmental advocate who has lived and worked in Central Australia for nearly 50 years. With a signature moustache and impassioned tales of tall characters, his work documents the wild ecologies and contested histories of Mparntwe/Alice Springs and beyond. He has published widely, including winning "Nature Photographer of the Year" from Australian Geographic Magazine.
