RAA Committee Profile
KATHARINA HENDEL
Vice President
Katharina Hendel of Takt Studio for Architecture joined the Regional Architecture Association (RAA) committee at its inception in 2021, driven by a passion for advocacy, networking, and improving support for regional practitioners. Having relocated to a regional area herself in 2010 to establish an architectural practice together with her partner and co-director, Katharina recognised a significant gap in the resources and professional networks available to architects outside metropolitan centres. She currently holds the role of vice president.
Drawing from prior involvement with formal and informal regional architecture networks and community initiatives, Katharina became a founding member of the RAA to help create a formal platform for connection, collaboration, and advocacy. A key motivation has always been the desire to communicate the value of architecture more broadly—both within the profession and to the wider community.
Since joining the committee, Katharina has played a central role in establishing the RAA’s communications infrastructure, including its website, membership systems, and digital networks. Katharina has also contributed significantly to the organisation and delivery of RAA events. A significant achievement is the 2023 Cowra event, Siting, held in a historic woolshed in the NSW Central West organised together with Takt Studio’s other committee member Brent Dunn. The remote, immersive setting exemplified the RAA’s commitment to regional specificity and community engagement.
Katharina believes a strong regional voice is essential in shaping architectural responses to local challenges—such as housing, climate resilience, and economic development. While regional practice shares much with metropolitan work, it also involves unique constraints and opportunities that deserve distinct recognition and representation.
The most rewarding aspect of committee involvement, Katharina says, has been the camaraderie, shared purpose, and friendships built through the RAA community. These relationships, alongside the diversity and expertise within the committee, have made the experience an invaluable source of professional growth and support.
For anyone passionate about the future of regional architecture, Katharina encourages getting involved in the RAA—whether through the committee or working groups. “These roles are a chance to actively shape the future of our regional communities, contribute to real change, and collaborate with a dynamic network of like-minded professionals.”
There will be committee positions open at the upcoming AGM in October. RAA members are invited to express their interest in joining by contacting Rhiannon on info@regionalarchitecture.net.au
