One of our Saturday fringe events will be a visit to the Cobar Early Learning Centre, led by Jonathan Temple (Dunn Hillam). We'll explore how thoughtful architecture can respond to both climate and community. Opened in October 2024, the purpose-designed facility was created by DunnHillam to provide an exceptional environment for children, families and educators while responding to the harsh climatic conditions of outback New South Wales..
COBAR EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
Designed as a robust outer shell protecting a sheltered internal courtyard, the building creates its own microclimate, with learning spaces, administration and amenities arranged around a secure landscaped heart. The design supports a child-centred, play-based learning environment while fostering connections between children of different ages, families and educators. Conceived as more than an early learning facility, the building also functions as a flexible community asset, with spaces designed to be used beyond childcare hours.
During our visit, we'll learn how the architectural response supports the centre's educational philosophy and creates welcoming, adaptable spaces that encourage creativity, independence, collaboration and belonging.
