Paulo Macchia will discuss his Byera Hadley research project exploring how local governments across Australia have used effective procurement processes to engage architects who deliver high-quality public buildings.

Paulo is a registered architect, holds a Master of Sustainable Built Environment and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Newcastle.

At Government Architect NSW, he is the director responsible for the NSW Housing Pattern Book, the Sustainable Buildings State Environmental Planning Policy and State Significant Design Excellence Competitions. He regularly chairs design advisory groups, including the City of Gosford Design Advisory Panel, as well as design competitions and design integrity panels, including for the new Sydney Fish Market.

In 2024, he was the recipient of the AIA National Leadership in Sustainability Prize. He was previously the Government Architect’s lead on the Anzac Memorial Centenary Project, which received the 2020 NSW Sulman Medal and the National Sir Zelman Cowen Award. He has been awarded the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship twice, and his research focuses on the human experience of the built environment and best-practice public building procurement processes.
